WE ARE A CERTIFIED ORGANIC FLOWER FARM, SPECIALIZING IN GROWING UNIQUE, BEAUTIFUL, AND PESTICIDE FREE FLOWERS
My flower obsession truly did not begin until the junior year of high school. It was over nine years ago that my mom opened up her very own floral shop, Stephanie's Secret Garden in the heart of Poolesville. MD. I remembered walking over there directly after high school, working with her on boutonnieres and corsages for various PHS homecomings and proms.
I began to research all there was to know about growing and harvesting flowers, soil composition, and how to create my very own organic compost. It was not until a month or two after, that I began ordering seeds and creating a very in-depth schedule of seedling grow dates, spacing requirements and anything else needed for growing healthy flowers. The couple of months approaching my first growing season was spent more in the greenhouse than anywhere else. Flower farming became my main priority, requiring my full attention day and night.
I continued to work with her throughout my last two years of high school as a novice florist before heading off to College. While I loved every and all things flower related, I wanted to try my hand at a completely new subject; oil painting would became my new passion. Throughout college, flowers seemed to never truly stray from my mind. I began to head home on weekends working with my mother on weddings, graduations, and all day flower design work.
College graduation came up faster than I expected. I moved into an apartment in Baltimore, MD and hit the ground running, showcasing my oil paintings in any and all exhibition shows I could. I continued this lifestyle as an artist for the next two years, until slowly transitioning over to a florist full time.
Over the next couple years, one wedding after another, designing with flowers became like second nature to me. Floral work while enjoyable, was somehow missing something important. It no longer carried that "It" factor, the excitement and unknown feeling that comes with a passion. I did not want to steer away from floral design all together, but add to it. I was always somewhat curious with how the cut flowers we were using were grown and harvested. So I began to research all there was to know about flower farming, soil composition, and germinate seedlings.
It was not until a month or two after that I began ordering seeds, creating in-depth flower germinating schedules, planning flower bed spacing requirements and anything else needed for cultivating beautiful and healthy soil for flowers. The couple of months approaching my first growing season was spent more in the greenhouse than anywhere else. Flower farming became my main priority, requiring my full attention day and night.
My first growing season came and passed, before I knew it I was already making plans for next year. I began to expand the farm, dug up unused land to add even more blooms, later building low tunnels to further expand my growing possibilities. Eventually, with only the help from a close friend of mine; the humble garden my mom used for sea oats and a few peonies shrubs grew into a bustling one- acre farm that supplied flowers to florist, markets, CSAs, and events.
